1 Plus Books is an independent Chinese humanities press founded in 2015 and based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Over the past decade, we have published more than 100 titles spanning memoir, oral history, literary fiction, and cultural essay — works that document individual experience, preserve collective memory, and sustain intellectual life within the global Chinese-speaking diaspora.
Our books are held in the collections of Harvard-Yenching Library, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and other major research universities. Selected titles have received the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Honor Book Award and Moonbeam Children's Book awards. In 2026, 1 Plus Books was selected as one of five publishers in the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) Innovative Voices Program — a national recognition of independent presses serving underrepresented communities.
We publish scholars, journalists, memoirists, and literary writers whose work deserves a serious home. 1 Plus Books exists to give exceptional Chinese-language writing a platform beyond borders — reaching readers across North America, Australia, Europe, and wherever the Chinese diaspora has put down roots.
In 2024, we established 1 Plus Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to extend our work into public programming — lectures, reading groups, and forums that bring writers and readers into conversation across borders and generations.
1 Plus Books distributes globally through major online retail platforms and select independent bookstores.
Yan Liu is the founder and publisher of 1 Plus Books. She brings over two decades of senior editorial experience in Chinese publishing. Before founding 1 Plus Books in 2015, she served as Director of the Education, Science and Culture Publishing Center at The Commercial Press, one of China's most prestigious publishing institutions. Prior to that, she held the position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief at New Star Press, and earlier in her career served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief at Baihua Literature and Art Publishing House, where she also served as Editor-in-Chief of Sanwen (散文), one of China's leading literary journals — during which the publication received the National Journal Award three times.
Her editorial work has been recognized with the Lu Xun Literature Prize for Outstanding Foreign Literature Editing (2004), awarded for her work on the Chinese edition of Nobel laureate Kenzaburo Oe's Goodbye, My Books (Baihua Literature and Art Publishing House). She also played a pivotal role in bringing Xiong Peiyun's Rediscovering Society (New Star Press, 2010) to publication — a book that sold out immediately upon release, went through seven printings within the year, and received the Wenjin Book Award from the National Library of China, among other major prizes.
Yan holds an MA in Contemporary Chinese Literature from Nankai University and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School (2004).
